Lecture by Kenro Takamori, General Manager of R&D Strategy Planning Department [KISTEC Educational Seminar “Starting with ‘Decommissioning’ as the First Step: Developing Technology and Human Resources for the ‘Next Generation’ as the Second Step”]

The Kanagawa Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (KISTEC) organized the educational seminar “Starting with ‘Decommissioning’ as the First Step: Developing Technology and Human Resources for the ‘Next Generation’ as the Second Step” in cooperation with IRID. In the seminar, Kenro Takamori, general manager of IRID’s R&D Strategy Planning Department, gave a lecture on IRID’s activities titled “The Current Status of the ‘Decommissioning’ of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS): ‘New Findings’ and Challenges to be Addressed.”

This was the second educational seminar focused on the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS since last year. The educational seminar this year featured the progress of investigation activities inside the primary containment vessel (PCV), development of related technologies for fuel debris retrieval, and the current situation of a frozen soil wall construction for radioactive wastewater management. Additionally, development of technology to enhance the safety for on-site workers for the decommissioning was also described.

The seminar also focused on roles of the middle generation leading actual decommissioning work to pass technology down to the next generation, and new approaches and challenges to teaching decommissioning technology at universities.

Despite the weekday schedule, the seminar was attended by over 100 people, which exceeded the number of expected attendees.

In the Q&A session after the seminar, the audiences were enthusiastic, asking questions about fuel debris retrieval methods inside the reactor, fuel debris characteristics, impacts of seawater injection, and others.

In the afternoon session, Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (ESS), one of IRID’s member organizations, provided a lecture on “Approaches to the Nuclear Decommissioning Conducted by the ESS: Investigation Inside the PCV, and the Progression and Challenges for the Preparation of Fuel Debris Retrieval.” The seminar covered the topic the “nuclear decommissioning” to provide information and deepen knowledge.
