Booth Display at the 89th Fukushima Prefecture May Day
(April 28, 2018)

International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) provides up-to-date information on research and development (R&D) towards the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) in various ways. One of these means involved IRID participating in the 89th Fukushima Prefecture May Day that was held on Saturday April 28, 2018.

This event was organized in cooperation with the Japanese Trade Union Confederation Fukushima. At the May Day venue, there was a special booth in the Azuma Sports Park, where IRID exhibited posters of its R&D regarding decommissioning technology and investigations conducted inside primary containment vessels (PCVs). There were also robot mock-ups such as a submersible robot equipped with the ability to shoot videos during underwater investigations (Remotely operated underwater vehicle “ROV” for Unit 3) and a shape-changing robot (PMORPH for Unit 1, provided by Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc.).

Owing to a good weather, the event was attended by over 2,900 people including union members, their families and their neighbors. IRID’s booth attracted many dedicated visitors who actively asked questions, showing that local residents had a high interest in the exhibitions.

IRID is committed to engaging in the reconstruction of Fukushima by gathering expertise through R&D from around the world for robust achievements during the safe and steady decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS.
