The 4th International Advisory Meeting was held during November 30 – December 2, 2016. International advisors are overseas experts who provide advice on organizational operation and management to IRID (Board of Directors).

The International Advisors observed the progress that has taken place among IRID activities since last year and also evaluated the R&D Design Review being established by IRID (IDR), safety concept of fuel debris retrieval, and enhancement of communication and information releases. Additionally, the advisors shared valuable advice on topics such as establishment of mechanism for knowledge transfer including failure case studies, promotion of balanced R&D, and so on. We will certainly make use of this advice to carry out faster and more effective R&D.

    Independent Consultant (former Site Director for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the Three Mile Island accident)
  • Professor Melanie Brownridge (UK)
    Head of Technology, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA)
  • Mr. Luis E. Echavarri (Spain)
    Former Director General of the OECD/NEA (experienced in the International Nuclear Safety Group (INSAG))

2.Overall schedule

  • November 30 (Wed): Current status of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (update), overview of IRID activities, and report of the progress on R&D projects
  • December 1 (Thurs): Report of IRID self-assessment
    Advice and proposals from International Advisors on overview of IRID activities
  • December 2 (Fri): Site tour at JAEA Naraha Remote Technology Development Center and the Fukushima Daiichi NPS

3.Advice and proposals from International Advisors

  • (1) Evaluation of progress on cross-cutting activities based on recommendations by advisors last year, and improvement in information releases.
  • (2) Establishment of the frank honest evaluation to reflect study results learning from negative experiences.
