Lecture by Vice President Dr. Tamio Arai and Kenro Takamori, General Manager of R&D Strategy Planning Department, at the FY2017 JAEA 3rd Summer School
(September 6, 2017)

Decommissioning of the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) accident may be required for the next 30 to 40 years. It is, therefore, essential to cultivate human resources for continuous decommissioning activities.

IRID intends to provide IRID activities, updates of the status of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, and decommissioning technology as required.

As one of IRID’s activities, IRID members provided lectures at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency’s (JAEA) 3rd Summer School.

[The 3rd Summer School]
The University of Tokyo has been engaged in the “Program for Research and Human Resources Development towards Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Plant,” which was commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), in cooperation with other relevant organizations. “FY 2017 The 3rd Summer School” was held as a part of the program on September 6-8, 2017, during which lectures on remote-operated technology and water stoppage technology for decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi NPS were given, and group discussions for undergraduates and students at the National Institute of Technology were led.

In Session 1 on Day 1, Dr. Tamio Arai gave a lecture on the status of remote-operated technology and design concepts for the decommissioning, entitled “Remote-operated technology for the decommissioning and its design concept.”

In Session 2 on Day 1, Kenro Takamori, General Manager of R&D Strategy Planning Department, discussed the status of fuel debris retrieval for the decommissioning and development of technology to confine contaminated water, entitled “Development of water stoppage technology for the Primary Containment Vessel (PCV).”
