Naoaki Okuzumi, Senior Manager of IRID’s R&D Strategy Planning Department, Delivers a Lecture at the KISTEC Educational Seminar: “On the Way to Nuclear Decommissioning”

The International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) supported the educational seminar “On the Way to Nuclear Decommissioning; What has been seen and what has been completed, the present and the future for technology development,” which was organized by the Kanagawa Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (KISTEC). In the seminar, Mr. Naoaki Okuzumi, Senior Manager of IRID’s R&D Strategy Planning Department, delivered a lecture to introduce our R&D achievements titled on “the Current Status of the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS); Follow-up Report of Findings and Issues to be Solved.”
This was the third seminar on nuclear decommissioning in the last two years. This year’s seminar covered the following lectures, delivered by presenters from organizations: on-site response under severe environments in the Fukushima Daiichi NPS after the tsunami, status of investigation inside the primary containment vessel (PCV) and technology development for fuel debris retrieval, technology development of investigation robots developed by Hitachi-GE, IRID’s member organization, and the current status of contaminated water and radioactive tritium management.
Despite being held on a weekday afternoon, the seminar attracted more than one hundred people, exceeding the capacity of the lecture hall.
In the Q&A session after the presentation, some of audience asked questions with interest on fuel debris retrieval methods for the reactor and technical issues of robot development among other things.
IRID is committed to promoting corporation with universities and research institutes through various lectures, including on-demand ones.
