The mid- and long-term roadmap towards the decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS), Units 1-4, describes the initiatives to “cultivate human resources and partnerships with universities and research organizations for mid- and long-term projects.” In order to promote these initiatives, the “Enhanced Program for Nuclear Decommissioning Research and Human Resources Development” of the “Initiatives for Nuclear Science and Technology and Human Resources Development by Drawing on International Knowledge and Expertise” was established to invest in national competitiveness.

Tohoku University has been addressing the issues through the program since FY 2014, as commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT).

As part of the program, “the FY 2017 Nuclear Science and Technology for Decommissioning” intensive course was offered for four days. On September 21, Kenro Takamori, the General Manager of the R&D Strategy Planning Department, gave a lecture titled “The Current R&D Status and Challenges for Decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi NPS.” He presented an overview of IRID, the conceptual design of the partial submersion-side entry method and the safety design for fuel debris retrieval.

IRID is committed to promoting a positive cooperation between colleges, universities, and research institutes through various lectures, including on-demand courses.
