The Tohoku University Safety Seminar on Light Water Reactor (Nuclear Decommissioning Class): Lecture by Mr. Kenro Takamori of IRID and Mr. Taiji Kobayashi of Toshiba Energy & Systems Solutions Cooperation

Tohoku University established a human resources development program for nuclear decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) Units 1 to 4 and addressed the issues obtained from the program since fiscal year (FY) 2014. As part of the program, an incentive course, “FY2021 Safety Seminar for Light Water Reactor (nuclear decommissioning class)”, was offered for three days and the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) provided an online lecture. On September 16, 2021, Mr. Kenro Takamori, General Manager of the IRID R&D Strategy Planning Department, delivered an online lecture titled “Current Status and Challenges of R&D for Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS,” which primarily focused on an overview of IRID, the status of fuel debris investigation, technological development, and challenges for fuel debris retrieval and safety design.
On September 17, 2021, Mr. Taiji Kobayashi, specialist of the Mechanical System Design & Engineering Department, Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions (ESS) Cooperation, which is one of the IRID member organizations, also provided an online lecture titled “Development of Robotic Technology for Nuclear Decommissioning and the Status of the Application in the Site” to introduce the robot developed for nuclear decommissioning to be used in the site.
IRID is committed to promoting active cooperation with universities and research institutes through on-demand courses and lectures.
