Delivering a Lecture by Naoaki Okuzumi, Senior Manager of Planning and Administration Department [Tohoku University Safety Seminar on Light Water Reactor (Nuclear Decommissioning Class)]
(September 26, 2023)

Tohoku University has addressed to develop human resource programs for nuclear decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) to contribute the Fukushima decommissioning as one of the most significant issues since 2014, aiming to cultivate young engineers and researchers who will engage in the decommissioning work in future.

As part of the program, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University, opened a recurrent education course “FY2023 Safety Seminar for Light Water Reactor (nuclear decommissioning class)” for graduate students and workers in industrial fields. At the seminar, Naoaki Okuzumi, Senior Manager of the Planning and Administration Department, the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID), had an online class titled “Current Status and Challenges of R&D for Decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi NPS” on September 26, 2023.

This seminar offered four-day online course from September 25 to 28, 2023 for the purpose of acquiring knowledge of new technology and exchanging information among academic and industrial fields.

His lecture included an overview of IRID, investigation status of fuel debris, technological development and challenges of fuel debris retrieval, as well as concepts of the safety design necessary for the nuclear decommissioning. The lecture was attended by approximately twenty students including foreign students.

IRID will continue to promote cultivating human resources for the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi.
