President Yamanouchi of IRID participate in the 8thUK-Japan Nuclear Industry Forum(October 30, 2024)

The 8th UK-Japan Nuclear Industry Forum was held on Tuesday, October 29 and Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at the Ambassador’s residence of the British Embassy in Tokyo, hosted by the UK Department for Energy Security & Net Zero and the British Embassy in Tokyo and supported by the UK Market Council, the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA), and the Japan Atomic Industry Forum Inc.

According to the JAIF, the total number of participants in the forum was about 100 people, including officials from related organizations and companies in the U.K. and Japan. (About 150 people attended the reception on October 29.) President Yamauchi participated from IRID.

On the second day, October 30, sessions on decommissioning and waste management were held. At the beginning of the session, President Yamauchi stated, “The technical cooperation between the UK and Japan since the 1950s, soon after the war, has laid the foundation of the Japanese nuclear industry, and joint development is still underway in the decommissioning project of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The valuable experience and lessons learned on decommissioning accumulated by the UK NDA have greatly encouraged Japan’s decommissioning projects. We hope to develop nuclear power as a safer and more sustainable energy source by cooperating with the UK in technological development and problem solving.”
Based on the deep historical ties between the UK and Japan, and the fact that IRID is currently working with British engineers on the research and development of experimental fuel debris retrieval device for the Fukushima Daiichi NPP Unit 2 reactor, he emphasized on the importance of continued cooperation between the two countries as the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant moves forward.
