The 33-rd Annual Conference of the Robotics Society of Japan (Sept. 3-5, 2015)
– IRID Received the 7th Robots and Society Award and Participated in the Open Forum –

IRID was awarded the 7th Robots and Society Award of the Robotics Society of Japan (RSJ) during the 33-rd Annual Conference of the RSJ on September 3-5, 2015.

This Award is given to individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the realization of a “robot-friendly society” by promoting and facilitating robots and robotics in society through various forms or by through social innovations.
IRID, Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy, Ltd., Hitachi, Ltd. and Tokyo Electric Power Company, Incorporated were granted the Award for their contributions to the development of “shape-changing robots” capable of working even under high doses and the utilization of robot technology for the investigation and removal of molten fuel inside the primary containment vessel (PCV) toward the deconditioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS).

In the Open Forum themed on “Cooperation with the Atomic Energy Society of Japan (AESJ) and Issues toward Decommissioning“ on September 5, Tetsuo Kotoku, Deputy General Manager of IRID R&D Strategy Planning Department, and Shunichi Suzuki, R&D Advisor to IRID and Professor of the University of Tokyo, gave lectures. The Forum affirmed that the advancement in remotely-operated robot technology is indispensable to decommissioning work under high doses and therefore it is important to strengthen the cooperation between the AESJ and the RSJ.
